Due to low user demand, Scan+ discontinued development in September 2019. In 2015, Scan+ 2.0 added touch-free scanning to improve scanning. At the time of its release, few apps combined the ability to scan, combine multiple pages, and OCR, Reviews, however, tend to critique the app’s scanning capabilities when compared to other scanning apps on the market. The addition of this new app, introduced the phrase PDFpen family of apps. PDFpen Scan+ was launched in 2013 as a scanning and OCR companion to PDFpen for iPad & iPhone. PDFpen for iPad & iPhone included support for pressure-sensitive styluses such as Apple Pencil, Pencil by FiftyThree, and JotTouch and JotScript from Adonit.

Īt its release, PDFpen for iPad & iPhone was popular among current PDFpen for Mac users as well as those interested in the concept of a paperless office. PDFpen for iPad and PDFpen for iPhone was eventually merged as PDFpen for iPad & iPhone 2.0 after Apple introduced universal apps allowing apps to run on iPad as well as iPhone. PDFpen for iPhone was released nine months later in September 2012. PDFpen for iPad & iPhone was first released as PDFpen for iPad 1.0 at Macworld/iWorld in 2012, and was one of the recipients of the 2012 Macworld/iWorld Best of Show awards. Since its initial debut, PDFpen has evolved over time into a comprehensive, PDF editing application for macOS, known for its extensive capabilities, user-first attitude, and an excellent reputation in the Apple community. The latest version of PDFpen uses the OmniPage OCR engine, which is recognized for its accuracy. Early versions of PDFpen used Google’s Tesseract OCR engine. PDFpen 4.0 introduced Optical Character Recognition (OCR) in 2008, which recognizes text in scanned documents so text can be selected, copied, and modified. Meantime, PDFpenPro recognized the more advanced needs of professionals, such as the ability to create cross-platform interactive PDF documents with fields that can be filled out by recipients. Version 2.0 added the ability to fill out forms, as well as search and highlight text. The following year, PDFpen 2.0 was released, along with PDFpenPro. Launched at MacWorld 2004, PDFpen’s first release - PDFpen 1.0 - was a lightweight app that focused on ease of use, basic PDF editing, scriptability, and signing contracts.

At that time, only two major options for handling PDF files existed - Apple’s Preview (free) where PDFs remained read-only, and Adobe Acrobat (paid) tailored for more advanced professional users - and no other PDF editing application was obviously available for the everyday user on a Mac.
